2023-2024 Annual Report
A Message From Our Executive Director

Laurie HartmannAs we reflect on the past year, it is with immense gratitude and pride that I share the progress and achievements of our Meals on Wheels organization. Your unwavering support and dedication have been the cornerstone of our success in meeting the needs of our community’s vulnerable older adult members.

Over the past year, we have seen remarkable growth and impact through our commitment to excellence in service and care. Our new facility allows us to expand and improve our operations to ensure that no one in our community goes hungry. Thanks to your generous contributions and the tireless efforts of our volunteers, Solano’s seniors not only receive nourishing food but also the vital connection that our regular visits provide.

Yet, our work is far from done. As we move forward, we remain focused on our mission to provide nutritious meals and supportive services with compassion and efficiency. While addressing the emerging needs of an ever-growing older adult population, we expanded our menu offerings, community partnerships, and outreach to those most vulnerable. We recognize that our success is a collective achievement, made possible by the dedication of our staff, the generosity of our donors, and the commitment of our volunteers. Together, we are making a profound difference in the lives of those we serve.

Thank you for your continued support and belief in our mission. With your help, we look forward to another year of positive impact and growth.

With heartfelt appreciation,
Laurie Hartmann
Executive Director

Who We Are Past & Present

Meals on Wheels Solano County (MOWSC) has been a cornerstone of support for the older adults Solano County since its inception. In 1977, MOWSC was established by a small group of grassroots community members with a vision to combat hunger and isolation through regularly delivered nutritious meals and companionship.

Today, MOWSC has since grown to become a comprehensive service provider. With seniors living longer and the need for aging services at an all-time high, it became critical to adopt a “More Than a M eal” philosophy and expand services beyond the food provided. MOWSC now offers additional programs including supplemental pet care, fall prevention equipment and assessments, and even tablets designed for senior isolation reduction.

As we move forward, itment to enhancing the well-being of our community remains unwavering, ensuring that every senior in Solano County can age with grace, dignity, and security.

Elsie

Meet Elsie

Fairfield Client

Elsie has been a Fairfield resident for nearly 25 years, and a MOWSC client since 2017. Aging and living alone since her husband’s passing has been a challenge. She’s always loved colorful food and music, and when it became difficult to stand and cook for herself, MOW SC came into her life. “It helps keep me fed, and always comes as scheduled with a smile,” she says when thinking about her regular volunteers. Elsie continues to maintain a colorful life through paint, art, and her infectious personality.

Meet Rose

Rio Vista Client

Rose has been a Solano County resident for 4 years and an MOWSC client for 2. She spent over 40 years in healthcare after immigrating from Haiti at age 26. Though taking care of others is deeply rooted in her faith and culture, Rose’s career and mobility slowed when her eyesight started fading. “Aging is hard. When you get older, so does your body. But your spirit… it stays young! I’m thankful to MOWSC and encourage their supporters to continue giving – the good will come back to you like it did me.” It’s Rose’s enduring positivity that continues to inspire us all.

Patty

Meet Patty

Vacaville Client

Patty is a longtime resident of Solano County and a MOWSC client for nearly 8 years. She has always served the community, from working as the Vacaville Parks & Recreation Commissioner to volunteering at Saint Mary’s food locker. However, after her knee replacement and broken leg, standing to cook meals became a challenge. “I worry about getting older, but MOWSC is such a lifesaver. I thank God for them. Seriously!” We are also grateful for Patty’s vibrant spirit and sharp wit.

Meet Ronald

Fairfield Client

Ronald has been a Solano County resident for roughly 10 years, and a MOWSC client since 2021. Living with heart problems and little to no transportation puts a heavy burden on his social interaction and access to nutritious food. However, Ronald credits his strong faith to being the source of light in his life, as well as the staff and volunteers who deliver his meals every week. “Sometimes I get very lonely and feel isolated. It feels really good to know that people in the community care.” Ronald, too, brings light to the lives of everyone he meets, including ours.

A Special Thanks

Meals on Wheels of Solano County thanks our sponsors for their continued generosity each and every year. Without their endless support, we would not be able to make the difference we have been for the past 44 years we’ve operated in Solano County.

Together, we have risen above each and every challenge for almost five decades to ensure that seniors are happy, healthy, included, and have nutritious meals to look forward to.

From the bottom of our hearts, and on behalf of our clients, we thank you.
